Bulbophyllum bowkettiae or Striped Snake Orchid, is a species of orchid in the genus Bulbophyllum although some taxonomists have recently reassigned it to the genus Serpenticaulis.[1]
It is endemic to Australia and is found in Queensland in the McIlwraith Range, and the Big Tableland to the Tully River. It is usually found at altitudes of 600-1200 metres but extends into coastal lowlands south of Innisfail. It is locally common and grows on rainforest trees, and rocks.
Thin, creeping rhizomes with widely spaced, deeply grooved pseudobulbs, 7-10 mm x 3-5 mm. Dark green, fleshy, tough and notched leaves,10-25 mm x 8-12 mm. Thread-like flower stems with curved apexes, 6-10 mm long. The nodding flowers appear from April to September and are 5-7 mm x 6-8 mm; cream with conspicuous red stripes (sometimes all reddish). Labellum about 2.5 mm long with a deep central groove.[2]
